چکیده

We present Chandra data from a 31.7 ks observation of the Centaurus cluster, using the ACIS-S detector. Images of the X-ray emission show a plume-like feature at the centre of the cluster , of extent 60 arcsec (20 kpc in projection). The feature has the same metallicity as gas at a similar radius, but is cooler. Using adaptive binning, we generate temperature, abundance and absorption maps of the cluster core. The radial abundance profile shows that the previously known, steep abundance gradient peaks with a metallicity of 1.3 − 1.8 Z ⊙ at a radius of about 45 arcsec (15 kpc), before falling back to 0.4 Z ⊙ at the centre of the cluster. A radial temperature profile shows that the temperature decreases inwards. We determine the spatial distributions of each of two temperature components, where applicable. The radiative cooling time of the cooler component within the inner 10 arcsec (3 kpc) is less than 2 × 10 7 yr. X-ray holes in the image coincident with the radio lobes are seen, as well as two outer sharp temperature drops, or cold fronts. The origin of the plume is unclear. The existence of the strong abundance gradient is a strong constraint on extensive convection or gas motion driven by a central radio source.

Enrichment in the Centaurus cluster of galaxies

We perform a detailed spatially-resolved, spectroscopic, analysis of the core of the Centaurus cluster of galaxies using a deep Chandra X-ray observation and XMM-Newton data. The Cen-taurus cluster core has particularly high metallicity, up to twice Solar values, and we measure the abundances of Fe, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca and Ni. We map the distribution of these elements in many spatial regio...

Detection of Intracluster Gas Bulk Velocities in the Perseus & Centaurus Clusters

We report the results of spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy of 8 different ASCA pointings distributed symmetrically around the center of the Perseus cluster. The outer region of the intracluster gas is roughly isothermal, with temperature ∼ 6–7 keV, and metal abundance ∼ 0.3 Solar. Spectral analysis of the central pointing is consistent with the presence of a cooling flow and a central metal...

Chandra temperature and metallicity maps of the Perseus cluster core

We present temperature and metallicity maps of the Perseus cluster core obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We find an overall temperature rise from ∼ 3.0 keV in the core to ∼ 5.5 keV at 120 kpc and a metallicity profile that rises slowly from ∼ 0.5 solar to ∼ 0.6 solar inside 60 kpc, but drops to ∼ 0.4 solar at 120 kpc. Spatially resolved spectroscopy in small cells shows that the tem...

Resonance scattering , absorption and off - centre abundance peaks in clusters of galaxies

A possible explanation for the central abundance dips found from spatially-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of several groups and clusters of galaxies is resonance scattering. A number of the prominent iron emission lines are resonance lines. We construct a unique spectral model which takes account of resonance scattering for several thousand resonance lines, projection effects, photoelectric absorp...

Photocatalytic Coating Using Titania-Silica Core/Shell Nanoparticles

The photocatalytic coatings were prepared via incorporating the modified titania nanoparticles into epoxy-based inorganic-organic hybrid coatings. Titania nanoparticles were first synthesized from tetra-n-butyl titanate using sol-gel methods by two different calcination treatments, i.e., in mild condition (80°C) and 500°C. The formed anatase nanoparticles were further modified as Titania-Silica...
